Joy After Loss | Makenzie's Story

Makenzie’s story holds two realities at once, deep loss and steady faith. People often ask how she can still trust God after losing both of her parents, and her answer is simple: she doesn’t see God as absent in her story, she sees Him as the one who carried her through it. She remembers her parents as joyful, goofy, and deeply loved by everyone around them, the kind of couple that made every gathering feel lighter. That’s what makes the shift so jarring when her dad’s mental health began to unravel in late 2021, sliding into fear, paranoia, and behavior that kept the family on constant alert.

On January 19, everything changed. Makenzie went to school like normal after a morning prayer with her dad and a hug from her mom. Later that day, no one answered her calls or texts. A welfare check turned into the moment that redefined her life, she learned her dad had killed her mom and then himself. In the aftermath, Makenzie leaned into church, and later found Victory Family Church through a friend’s invitation. As her relationship with Jesus grew, she chose baptism and began building a future her parents would be proud of, graduating high school and starting LPN school, carrying forward the nursing dream her mom never got to finish. If you want to hear how Makenzie found joy again, what helped her faith become personal, and why she’s certain God was looking after her even in the darkest day, watch her full story on YouTube.
